Transitions and Depression

Transitions can lead to depression. Transitions such as leaving a job, aging, moving, having a last session with a client, the death of a loved one, floods that destroy home and lives. We want the feelings that come along with depression such as sadness, anger, emptiness and fear to go away!

Steps to take during times of transition:

One step to take is to not judge ourselves for having these feelings. It is okay to talk to ourselves and say: “It is okay to feel sad.” If we are hard on ourselves for having these feelings, how can we make our way through life?

The second step is to pay attention to self-care. Feelings of depression can drain the body’s energy. Allow yourself a nap or a short mediation.

The third step is to take advantage of music. Music can help us feel less alone. If you are singing, maybe you can laugh at yourself 🙂

The fourth step or suggestion is to ask yourself, “if someone else were dealing with depression, what would I say to them?”

I suspect you would be kind. Be kind to yourself.
