April is Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder awareness month. There are many ways to learn more about PMDD. One great resource is The International Association for Premenstrual Disorders. There is a self screening tool on their website if you are wondering if you are experiencing PMDD. This video may resonate with you. Please be warned, it can be hard to watch. A quote from the video is “survival is barely living.” I have heard may people describe the symptoms of PMDD in this way.
The symptoms can include mood changes, low energy, feeling overwhelmed, confusion, bloating and pain in the body or joints, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, anger, lack of or increased appetite, changes in sleep patterns and increased sensitivity. From the IAPMD website: PMDD is a suspected hormone sensitivity disorder in the brain. Studies suggest that, among women and AFAB (assigned female at birth) individuals with PMDD, brain circuits involved in emotional response may activate differently compared to those without PMDD.
Tracking these symptoms on a monthly basis can be helpful and determine what one is dealing with. Being ready for the phase of your cycle that brings up all of these symptoms may help manage your life. The attached graphic was created by Alyse Ruriani. Follow them at @alyseruriani on Instagram.
