No matter what age you are, your hormones impact your physical and mental health. If you had/have/will have menstruation, you have experience with hormones fluctuations. Some might find this manageable and others may suffer with intense symptoms such as mood swings, hopelessness, depression, anxiety, exhaustion, sleep challenges, bloating, lack of focus, headache, increased sensitivity, muscle pain, body aches and appetite changes.
Currently, there isn’t one identifiable cause of PMDD. It does appear to run in families, though, Dr. Gleaton says. A 2016 literature review Current Psychiatry Reports (CPR) laid out some possible causes related to hormone fluctuation before menstruation. Progesterone, a reproductive hormone, increases during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, Dr. Gleaton explains. Then it plummets right before you start your period; the literature suggests some people who menstruate could be more prone to emotional and physical symptoms of this hormone shift.
