Hormones and Mental Health

Hormones are complex. Maybe that’s why no one talks about them until something has gone awry. I have experienced doctors visits where I ask about hormones and the medical professional suggests birth control to regulate hormones. No discussion about what is happening. Just a prescription, which I take, but don’t fill, https://www.news-medical.net/amp/health/PTSD-and-Periods.aspxjust in case.

I know many people experience this. The truth is many times we have to do our own research. Asking friends, family members, using google, reading books and articles that might offer any direction, when we feel directionless.

Our physical health is connected to our mental health and vice versa. In the article PTSD and Periods, Dr. Liji Thomas says “ it has been observed that anxiety disorders emerge around the age of puberty when people start to have their monthly cycles.” Mood fluctuations should be a part of the discussion with the medical professional at all ages.

To read more about the connection between mental health and hormones see the website University of California San Francisco or www.ucsf.edu. Their Center for Reproductive Health can be helpful and has links to additional resources.
